There's a moral to this story

This past weekend was full of great food and it was cooked by other people. I didn't cook a thing. Not even toast. That's my favourite kind of food. Stuff that magically appears with no effort on my part. In a previous life I think I was a Princess and people fetched and carried for me  and I didn't have to lift a finger. Somehow I've retained the memory of those wonderful times and I'm spending a lot of my current life pissed off that I have to do all of those things myself.

On Sunday, we went to Cheesefest so not only did I eat my weight in cheese samples, I also managed to chug down some chips fried in duck fat (mmmm healthy) and a pork belly burger with caramelised apples and some funky (in a good way) BBQ sauce. I'm thinking I may try to recreate those burgers at home. It'd be a great meal to do for a crowd and it was delicious.

We bought some cheese.  Oh how we bought cheese. I am a cheese-a-holic and if I ever turn into a serial killer and wind up on death row I'm going to ask for a cheese platter as my last meal. And since we have 43 blocks of cheese I'm all ready for guests so if you want to come over please feel free . Bring crackers. Cynthia, you're in charge of bringing wine.

When I got home on Sunday , I felt the urge to bake. Cookies no less. The idea has been rattling round in my head for about a week and would simply not be silenced. That was my first mistake- listening to the voices in my head. I've been trolling Pinterest and the internet looking for inspiration. And I continued searching when I got home from Cheesefest yesterday. Because I was so full of cheese I needed something sweet. After two hours, I finally narrowed it down to Ginger Molasses Cookies or Chocolate Chip.

Then I decided I was feeling way too lazy to bake cookies.

An hour later, in  a flash of motivation I decided it was now or never.   And I chose Cinnamon and Brown Butter Chocolate Chip.  I'd have those babies done in time for warm cookies for a late supper. That was the plan as it played out in my head.

This is a slightly complicated recipe. First you have to brown the butter without burning it.  Then you have to cool it to room temperature. Then in another bowl you have to get some of the dry ingredients together. Then you have to add other stuff to the cooled butter and beat it until your arm falls off. Then with your other arm you have to add the dry ingredients. Finally you have to add the chocolate chips and stir them in by hand with a spoon. I used every bowl, measuring cup and spoon in my kitchen.

That's when I took a breather and decided to clean up a bit and turn the oven on to heat in preparation for the delight of baking my own cookies. So I flicked my eye over the recipe to see what temperature the oven had to be on, when out of the corner of my eye I saw this in the recipe.

Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate the dough for at least 12 hours.

I'm pretty sure I said WTF! out loud. And you all know how much I abhor swearing. I've heard of resting pastry and even refrigerating cookie dough but for 12 hours? Really? The dough didn't do anything but laze around in the bowl. If anyone deserved a 12 hour rest it was probably me, not that lazy arse cookie dough. But I was determined these cookies were going to be awesome and so I accepted I was just going to have to get up at the crack of dawn and bake those cookies before I went to work. Every time I deviate from a recipe I end up scraping stuff off my ceiling.

That early am cookie baking? Didn't happen. I got distracted by a load of Bloggers Quilt Festival posts. I excel at finding things to distract myself.

So when I got home tonight and told Mr. P it was too hot to cook dinner and that I hadn't even eaten lunch until 3pm so I wasn't all that hungry anyway I had totally forgotten I had 23 hour old cookie dough cooling its chips in my fridge. Until I opened the fridge at 7.00pm to get a drink and saw it sitting there looking at me with accusing eyes. By this stage I had 23 hours of my life and about 17.00 bucks in cookie ingredients invested in a finish.

I said WTF! And you all know how much I abhor swearing. And then I took the cooking dough out of the fridge and sat it on the bench to come to room temperature as the recipe called for (making the whole resting in the fridge for 23 hours kind of redundant if you ask me since it was at room temperature yesterday before I put it in the fridge) and then I rolled those cookies into balls and threw them in a 180C degree oven to torture them for 10-14 minutes.

These cookies are da bomb. Cinnamony and chocolatey and buttery deliciousness.  Mine are also the size of man hole covers, so I can eat three without feeling a shred of guilt. Run off and make them now. Just don't forget about the 12 hour compulsory rest after the first leg of the race.

The moral of this story. Things are only ever effortless with food when someone else takes responsibility for it. ( I just sent Mr. P down to the shops to get my dinner - a pack of salt and vinegar chips) Lessons learned: Read the freaking recipe BEFORE you start cooking.

Call me "Domestic Goddess"

This weekend I finally saw the bottom of my dirty laundry hamper. I consider this to be one of my most successful achievements for the week. When you get to Friday and have to wear a dress to work because you don't have any clean/ironed jeans left it's definitely time to crank up the washing machine. Especially when you own 20 pairs of jeans.

I also undertook any number of other boring, mundane but necessary chores this weekend,  like dusting cobwebs from my ceiling cornices because it was starting to look like I was getting in with some early Halloween decorating here. I washed cushion covers, and dusted skirting boards and cleaned blinds and moved furniture to vacuum. I feel so virtuous!

In truth I cleaned properly for the first time in so long Im embarrassed to publicly put a time frame on it. But I'm full of ulterior motives.

Little Miss Sunshine bought something recently that I thought was frankly the best invention ever and within days I had rushed off to buy one for myself.

But since my house was such a filth pit, Sadie was having trouble picking up the three inches of dog hair masquerading as shag pile carpet  as she scooted round the house vacuuming her little heart out. Bless her. This is as close to a maid as I'm ever going to get. Now that the house is clean I'll be cracking the whip and expecting her to be earning her keep while I'm out working.

You may recall the coffee sack cushion I made in February. (by the way that chair is still waiting to be re-upholstered- just the thought of doing it scares me)  In my cushion cover washing frenzy this weekend I discovered what an awesome job my washing machine does.  Ummmm yeah - where did the writing go? Now it's just a plain Hessian cushion which isn't half as trendy as having a coffee sack cushion.

I decided to play round in the kitchen today to get rid of some stuff we had lurking in both the fridge and the freezer. I'm on a waste not want not kick at the moment.

Scrambled eggs (It was supposed to be an omelette but it kind of got stuck to the bottom of the pan )

Broccoli and Potato soup

Lamb Rogan Josh

Lemon and vanilla coconut cake.

Not one skerrick of sewing has been done for a week. There I said it out loud. Kick me out of the crafty club. I may just get to it this week. If my machine decides to play nice.

Cue the Twilight Zone Music

I feel like I'm living in an episode of the Twilight Zone this week.

On Thursday I managed to go to work with my undies on inside out and wore them like that all day without even noticing. I guess I should be grateful I didn't discover I'd gone to work commando.

On Friday my Dad ended up in hospital and it wasn't even anyone's birthday. He's OK now but I'm starting to suspect his forays into hospital are some weird pensioner plot to save money on his home grocery bill.

Saturday I discovered we had run out of tissues so I'm using toilet paper to blow my nose until Wednesday because I'm too lazy to go to the shops. We NEVER run out of tissues. Normally I have 43 boxes in my tissue place stash right next to no less than 89 toilet rolls in case there's a world toilet paper shortage, or a flu pandemic.

On Saturday I managed to double delete my entire email inbox and I have no idea how I did it. It's like I had an electrical force field around me that sucked all the emails into the ether.  So if you emailed me in the 24 hours between Friday and Saturday and I haven't responded, I'm not being rude, some dumb arse deleted my emails.

I spent some time Saturday morning pondering the fickle nature of life, and  decided to just go with the flow. If the universe wants to chuck weirdness at me I'm not going to fight it - I'm going to go right along with it.

And so, I started making a quilt back for a quilt front that I hadn't even started yet because I'm one wild and crazy girl.

And on Saturday night I discovered I am a mere 1.5 metres short of being able to finish the back and make my binding, so the universe really did have the last laugh. Not to be deterred, I ordered extra fabric online to finish it up and I'm showing what I've done anyway.

Sunday dawned looking particularly foul so it was a good day to stay inside in my pyjamas (any excuse will do)

I cut 324 of these little blighters.

and even managed to get some of them sewn together into  a couple of rows

I also made a big run at my Selvage String blocks this weekend,  prompted in part by this pile of goodness sent to me by Sue at Craft The Final Frontier Thank you Sue.

By the way my "big run " was 10 whole blocks. I better get a wriggle on because I'm planning to finish this quilt by the end of the month and at this stage I still have 96 blocks to make.

After a while I got bored with that and went and tortured my oven . Mr. P got banana bread...

and I braved making whoopie pies for the first time since my oven was resurrected.

Finally!  Woopie Pies that don't look like pancakes or have the consistency of Chinese throwing stars.

I've been meaning to show this pork belly off for about two weeks.  I've cooked pork about three times in my life and this was one of them. I think I'll be cooking it again because it was DELICIOUS! And it looks pretty too-like something out of a food magazine.

Last but not least, I'm at the "finishing the binding" stage for the Hourglass quilt.

I started that tonight while I watched Downton Abbey. I wonder if I can pull off three quilt finishes for June?

I hope your weekend has been fabulous. Mine was nowhere near long enough !
