Going Home

I mentioned that my Dad had a birthday last week so Mr. P and I drove to my folks place this past weekend to pay a visit. It's about a three hour drive north of here and we haven't done the trek since Easter. I always refer to my parents place as "home" even though I've never lived there. I guess that proves that home is wherever the people you love are.

Even if they pull faces like this...

I warned you that was going on my blog Dad.... don't ever dare me. You know you'll lose.

I took this picture on the drive up  to deliberately freak out all my friends in the US because it looks like we're driving recklessly and wantonly on the wrong side of the road. I wonder how I'm going to go with changing sides of the road  when we're away and whether I'm going to spend my days in a perpetual state of agitation about crashing.

I spent the car ride finishing sewing the binding onto Home on The Range (when I wasn't taking shots of the road and firetrucks to show Little P )  so I could give it to my Dad when we got there. There's nothing like bringing a finish down to the wire.

And Dad loved it. And I loved it so much I used it all weekend to keep warm since my folks live in Antarctica.

I'm so happy with how this turned out that I may have to make a scrappy tumbler at some point just for me.

Love the back almost as much as the front. It makes me want to go out and find a boot scooting class.

While I was at my folks I raided my Mum's garden for goodies to bring home. And I dreamed of putting in a vegie garden at our place and then dismissed the thought because I have a black thumb. I figure as long as my Mum gardens I can just steal the fruits of her labours.

I spent some of the weekend working on more hexie flowers. It's getting to be  a decent sized pile, but still feels like its taking forever  ...and now I'm looking for a volunteer to peel the paper out. Anyone want to put their hand up?

And finally I have something to link up to Elizabeth's monthly linky party!

  4. Heh, always fun to embarrass your parents on your blog :oD

For the drive you'll be fine, as the steering wheel is on the other side too, your instinct is to pass driver to driver, honest... Although we'll pass over the first 5 mins of a driving lesson when I was at high school in Canada that I was on the wrong side of the road of, just shows what a small town it was though that no-one came the other way ;o)

  6. The tumbler quilt is lovely. I can see why your dad liked it.

  7. The tumbler quilt turned out beautifully.

My Guy was in the UK last fall and he did OK until he had to make a turn. But the biggest thing he struggled with was remembering which way to look when he was crossing the street on foot. Something to consider when you make to the seemlingly backwards ways of the USA.

  8. When we were in Australia, we were definitely freaked out with the driving. After a bit it seems okay but turning still seems a bit freaky. You are younger so will probably adapt more quickly. Your quilts looks wonderful.

  9. I didn't realize y'all drive on the left. guess I should have figured that. Love the picture of your dad -- that's what he gets for the dare. I love the tumbler quilt. It is gorgeous. You do like doing things last minute don't you!?! You can always send me the hexies .. I'd be happy to take the paper out for you.

  11. Don't worry about the driving thing. It's not like you'll be the only one on the wrong side of the road!
When I went to USA I drove from Dallas texas to Maryland. No worries, just take a moment to think which way to turn when you have been off the road.

  12. I had nightmares (honest) about driving on the wrong side of the road AFTER I came home...and I only drove in the wilds of Canada where the biggest concern was hitting a moose. In the end I let my travel companion drive in the city, cos it was getting in and out of servo's and parking that caused lots of cussing. DH goes to USA for work and seems to cope fine, even when he takes the wrong turn and ends up in the BAD part of town after dark -yikes make sure you have sat nav!
Love the tumbler, want to make one if someone else cuts them out...prepared to remove papers from hexies as a trade!

  13. Definitely like father like daughter!
You'd have freaked me out if you had taken pictures of you driving on the other side of the road.
I love the way you like living on the edge and leave the last bit of binding for the drive there. Lucky you didn't have to drive!!!!!
What are you going to make with the fruit?
I'm not putting my hand up for paper removal and I don't think anyone else besides Sue is going to either, you're on your own there!

  16. lolol Love your dad's pic. Like father, like daughter? The quilt looks absolutely fabulous. The colours and your quilting looks great. You are a bit too far away for us to take the papers out of your hexies together over a cuppa and some cake....so you are on your own with that one!

  17. Tell you Dad he is quite handsome....
The quilt turned out great, hey, you needed something to do on the drive anyway, right? I'm glad you were able to go see the folks ~

  18. I was totally freaked out...but not by the road, it was that FACE pull :)

Home is where your family is. Period.

Love the quilt, glad you got to enjoy its warmth in Antarctica. When are you going to be in the hot and humid-Hawaii land?

  19. We are sisters... I leave mine for the last minute, too.
You can grow citrus really easily. We don't fertilize, water (except a little with a dripper hose), or spray for bugs. We get wonderful tangerines and oranges, and an occasional lemon.
I heard the phrase "Home is where your Mom lives", but not in my case.
    Hugs

  20. What a great quilt, I really like these colors together. I'd be happy to pull out papers, but my arms aren't quite that long. Come check out Alabama while you're in the US.

  21. LOVE how that tumbler quilt came out! You did a beautiful job and I love that you finished it in the car on the way. Been there. Done that. Trying not to repeat.

Also, I'm a little jealous that you can pick your own lemons. It would be nice if we could grow citrus here.

And, lastly, LOVE those hexies! Send them to me and I'll pull the paper out.

  22. Antarctica? North? Ok. Very confusing post Miss Shay. Beautiful quilt though! Your Dad is a lucky man. (Even with that photo you posted.)

  23. I think every Dad reacts like a silly bugger when the daughter gets out the camera. I know my Dad always did. No wonder he is thrilled with his quilt Shay, it is stunning.

  28. Love that fabric range. Nothing like a country drive to get some hand sewing done.

  31. Ha ha, I've got a photo somewhere of my dad pulling the exact same face at me! good thing my photo is about 25 years old and therefore not digital so he is safe from being blog fodder...I can't even imagine driving in a country where they drive on the wrong side, I was happy to drive in Britain and Ireland after all they drive on the correct side but it was freaky enough for me as a passenger in Dubai to have the driver on the wrong side of the vehicle! Good luck!!
Not surprised your Dad loved his quilt, or that you want to make another one, it's fabulous, love it...

  34. While in Bermuda last week, I could not get over the driving on the other side of the street. Before going over, I thought for sure we would rent scooters to zip around the island - after all, I had a motorcycle from 1993 until 2005 - but I just didn't trust myself to not drive on the wrong side. At one pint, I was sitting at the bus stop and crazily waving a scooter over because I was sure they were driving on the wrong side. Sheesh! I'm glad I didn't cause an accident.
