The Dangers of Cooking

This post is for all the people who think I should eat more vegetables....

Vegetables did this to me today . Yes that's right I was attacked by a turnip.

And a very sharp knife.....

My doctor says if I'm going to try  re-creating Assaggio chicken vegetable soup at home because I'm too cheap to pay the 15 bucks a bowl I should be cutting vegetables with a butter knife.

Don't panic. These are making me feel wonderful.

We'll see whether I'll get to keep the top of my finger on Monday or whether I'm forever doomed to have a weird angled pinkie.....

  1. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Are you seriously maybe going to lose the tip of your finger? Turnips are very dense, was that the problem? What kind of knife?

Rob had the tip of his pinkie reattached - he got it caught in a machine at a summer job, and the plastic surgeon re-attached it (you know the term, hanging by a thread? - his was hanging by a nerve, even smaller than a thread). it was pretty yuck.

He took vicodin for the pain, but only once because he felt so loopy - maybe you like the loopy :)

    feel better, friend -

  2. I hope the turnip looks worse and was suitably punished, because obviously it was all it's fault.

Hope you heal fast, and don't have to go through life with a weird pinkie.

  3. Ouch you and vegetables is the same as me and exercise. We should make them both illegal.
Kirsten I'd bet a lot of money that Shay definitely likes the loopy!
Crossing everything that the tip of your finger stays with you.

  5. At least it wasn't a quilting related injury, seen a few rotary cutting injuries in the last little while. Hope the finger stays together. OOh it gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

  6. Cooking is evil. I suggest you quit immediately. :P Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it heals nicely.

  7. Ohhhh that is a nasty kitchen injury. I'd give up cooking if it was me.

  8. One of the many reasons I don't cook... Rotary cutting has come close to chopping off my fingers many a time, and I don't need another excuse to wield a sharp blade.

Just use it as an excuse for any typos you make over the next month. don't even bother re-reading, just be like, sorry, I only got nine tying digits left...

  9. Ouch! I hope you come out of this with your pinkie fully intact. You are not going to believe this, but I was mulling what I might post for a FTF, and I considered that one of my favorite things to do might be to cut things: fabric, vegetables, hair, paper, etc. You'll notice that fingers are not on the list.

    Heal fast!

  11. Oh and Ow! That's what husbands are for and who eats turnips anyway?

I got some new sewing scissors once, a long time ago, and my #2 son dared my #1 daughter to cut off his pinky finger .. we spent some time in the hospital. His pinky finger is still intact.

  12. Oh Shay, I'm sorry! It's time to let Mr. P cook!

  13. Aha! You have just highlighted the very reason why I avoid cooking. Turnips have to be one of the toughest veggies to chop into. Hope your pinkie feels better soon and I would take full advantage of the injury and put your feet up (and your finger lol) xxx

  14. Oh sh***. Hope the answer to the last question is that you do get to keep your pinkie tip. It complements your hand so well.

  15. You should have been sewing instead...then this tragedy would have been avoided. Did you learn your lesson? I hope so!

  16. Yikes! I'm sure it will grow back all pretty-like! (Or you can make up some exciting quilting story)

  17. I like your idea Brenda. How about I pretend I was attacked by a crocodile while I was quilting? Or accosted by a rabid Koala?

  18. Ouch! My son had a run in with a pumpkin almost two years ago. He had to have a skin graft to close the top of his finger. Vegies. You can't trust them!

  20. Glad you're okay now,and speedy recovery to you!
I say, invest in a good knife. My daughters and I were just talking about how much better it is to have the proper equipment for the job, and safer!

  22. Update:

The turnip was suitably punished . Miss P finished chopping it up and we ate it in the soup!

To all of you commented cooking is an extreme sport-I totally agree. See what happens when I attempt to enter my own kitchen?

  23. Those bloody turnips! Hope your finger is all better soon! x

  24. Ouch.....not too good......does this mean you will never be able to cook again? you will have to get the maid to do all the kitchen chores?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK Young lady...you may be the queen of all things quilty...but you should step away from the kitchen bench...now! Sorry to see that you have come off second best against (of all things) a turnip! Hope you get to keep the top of your pinkie! Take (better) care my friend....thinking of you (and your pnkie)

  26. Oh my goodness, Shay! You certainly did a fine job cutting that finger. I shut my finger in the hinge of a garage door and had the same thing. I was 6 years old; they stitched it up and covered it and in a week I had to go back and the Dr. told my mom that if the tip of my finger was black when the wrap came off I'd lose that portion of my finger. I remember my mom sitting in the chair and she was a nervous wreck...he slowly took that wrap off and she saw a pink tip...she cried tears of joy!
I admit that finger isn't the lovliest looking thing but it is to me :)
I'll pray for your health and to keep that fingertip!

  27. ewwww...thanks for not sharing a picture of the injury...hope you heal!!!

  28. Good grief woman! I told you no drinking when cooking! If I remember the last time you did that, you set your friends kitchen on fire! Apparently your lesson was not learned.

I hope you are still able to quilt. Keep us informed!

  29. It seems you should limit your use of sharp instruments to the sewing room where there is nothing so dangerous as a 'turnip'.

glad you got to enjoy the soup.

    Heal fast, Enjoy those drugs.

  30. OUCH!!! That looks nasty! I can empathise with you this weekend as my finger was chomped by my horse who thinks he is a shark when there is food around....I think I should be taking some of those drugs too!

PS Don't bother with the turnips they only taste good roasted and thats because you smother them in gravy :-)

  31. DH has sliced his finger open with box cutter and a butcher knife. Both times required lots of stitches. I hope you get to keep your pinkie tip. Enjoy the pain killers

  32. EEEEWWWWWW.....what some people will do to get out of cooking....I nearly did that to my finger at work on the slicer I had to pick the bits of blue plastic glove out of the meat !!!

  33. Two words:

    Two more:

    Pain sucks!

Praying for a pink pinkie, Shay!

  34. Sorry I'm so late in commenting. This was a little hard to process for me. I'm really crossing my fingers for you and hoping that the damage is not irreparable. Oh, and the tingling? I MUST be a good sign.
