I live in the 5th largest city in Australia but since we only have 1.2 million people here the larger cities often poke fun and laugh at us. We don't care (Sydney , Melbourne, Brisbane) because Adelaide is a lovely old city, full of beautiful architecture and it doesn't take us hours to get to work because of the traffic. Our house prices are still manageable too. For half a million you can still get something really nice. Suck on that. Perth, you seem quite nice because you don't poke fun at us but I guess thats because you know that Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane don't really know where you are and if you start being vocal, their attention might turn to you instead. You kind of remind me of Switzerland without the snow or formal declaration of neutrality.
One of the things about living in a smaller capital city is that we're always last on the list when it comes to getting the cool stuff. Case in point- Krispy Kreme. For YEARS the most oft seen hand luggage at Adelaide airport for inbound flights has been boxes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Yes- roughly every third person flying in from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane appears to bring back a box of delicious doughnutty goodness.
That all changed yesterday when our very own Krispy Kreme opened at Croydon. People had actually been queuing since Sunday to get doughnuts on opening day (I'm not that insane). I was going to wait for the crowds to die down and get my doughnut fix in a week or so.
But HAPPY DAY- Mr. P works on that side of town and last night he came home with the Most . Exciting. Present. Ever.
Just check out all that sugary awesomeness ...I had already inhaled a cinnamon doughnut in one bite before I thought to take a picture. Priorities people ...priorities. The doughnuts won over the photo op.
Mr. P went down in his lunch break, stood for two hours in a queue and brought back two boxes of Krispy Kremes. He gave one to the ladies in his office and brought one home for me. Sadly, mine is now almost empty because I had doughnuts for dinner last night. I have answered one of the great questions of life - it is possible to eat 9 doughnuts in one sitting.
P.S. Naysayers - do not comment on this post - if you bag my Krispy Kreme addiction we simply cant be friends anymore.
Enjoy! We only just got one in Scotland recently, but it's in Edinburgh, and much as I love Krispy Kremes, I hate getting to Edinburgh/travelling in Edinburgh more
ReplyDeleteThat is true love. I had to laugh because almost every time we go to Spokane (2 1/2 hrs. away) we come back with two boxes of Krispy Kremes. My husband always complains and says he doesn't like them and then he eats a couple anyway.:)
ReplyDeleteGood on you Shay! Brownie points for your hubby... you made me laugh as usual.
ReplyDeleteTwo hours in a queue for anything...that's some dedication right there. I just ate half a gluten-free cinnamon roll from a fancy bakery an hour away and honestly? It sucked.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great and smart man Mr P is to win friends in the office and at home! I'm a Krispy Kreme virgin so I'll have to head down at some stage to see what the fuss is about! (I totally get eating 9 donuts for dinner - if they're as light as Gourmet Glaze ones they'd just vanish, whereas you couldn't eat too many Balfours ones in a sitting!)
ReplyDeleteIt's really bad when you go through their drive-thru to pick an after dinner snack and breakfast. They never last till breakfast!
ReplyDeleteKrispy Cremes are just too good!! Mr P is The Man for bringing those home. You had me laughing at your descriptions of Australian cities, oh so true!!
ReplyDeleteloved your blog post! we love those things in Georgia to, hubby says they jump in to the buggy in the grocery store
ReplyDeletehow funny - I do love doughnuts but I guess they aren't all that important to me - we do not have them in the town I live closest to but they have them just down the street from my mom's and you know I have never stopped! I don't know why I guess I am just not thinking about it when I'm leaving - I could grab a box and eat half of them on my way home - it is a 2.5 hour drive - really - I could grab a coffee too and be set - I might have to think about this later in the week when I go visit!!
ReplyDeleteFirstly as a Melbourne-ite I just was to apologise - we are just jealous of your lovely city!! We live as far out of the city as possible while still being (mostly) classed as Metro :)
ReplyDeleteMmm I LOVE Crispy Creme! I remember when the first one opened here at Fountain Gate, it was only about 15 mins from where we used to live, and it opened the day after my hubby's birthday. And guess what he wanted for his birthday? Right! So I went the day after it opened, queued for 8+ hours, and finally came home with 2 boxes which we all ate within a VERY Short period of time!
Make sure when things calm down that you go and try one of their original glazed while they are still hot - OMG they are sensational!!
I was going to say Enjoy your doughnut delights, but I see that needs to be past tense.
ReplyDeleteHope he goes back to replenish the supplies soon!
I really think they put something in those that make them addictive. You can not eat just one, more like 6! It's a good thing the closest one to us is an hour away!
ReplyDeleteHa! I live in Northern California, San Francisco area, and we have one on our town. They are awesome! They are the absolute best straight hot off the assembly line. Melt in your mouth yummy! You must try them that way someday! Oh...and my hubby and son would go get a dozen and a half and eat the half on the way home! Yes ...I could probably eat 9 too!
ReplyDeleteI hear you sister, I love Krispy Kremes too. None near us either, which, after reading your labels, I'm eternally grateful, that they are not close by. You can stop taunting me too, thanks, by eating one while Face Timing.
ReplyDeleteAs you know I live out of the city and in recent weeks we have had a Hungry Jacks store open to massive queues and traffic chaos...so I guess similar scenes to the recent Krispy Kreme opening in the suburbs. Glad you enjoyed your dinner - I think I put on a few kgs just looking at all that sugary "goodness".
ReplyDeleteWe don't have Krispy Kremes here, we're too small......way back when I lived in the Big Smoke I could indulge in them, though. And I did.
ReplyDeletenever seen or had them here in the UK.. will believe you that they are good x enjoy x
ReplyDeleteI was falling off my seat laughing while reading this! Mr P is a real saint queuing for 2 hours to get doughnuts. They have an outlet here in London Paddington railway station and a few of the motorway service stations( and probably loads of other places that I haven't noticed). I always resist the temptation because as you say, you can't just eat one.I think 9 must be a record though! Did you have to lie down afterwards?
ReplyDeleteI'm sad to see our friendship might have to end, Shay, as I don't like doughnuts really at all. It's been nice knowing you!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same as AnnieO I have never liked doughnuts and so have never tasted Krispy Kreme and really don't know why all the excitement over fried dough.
ReplyDeleteWe had one open here several years ago and the same thing happened-crowds and crowds of people. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a novelty and business died off after a year or so. It closed a couple years ago. People here seem to prefer their Dunkin Donuts. I liked them but I am better off without them
ReplyDeleteThe 2 kids who won the year and 6 month supply of Krispy Krems were brothers. One gets a doz a week for 52 weeks the other the same for 6 months. One of them is on Maestro's footy team, already an unfit round lad I am sure he will be really healthy by the end of the year NOT.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Krispy Kremes are sugar free so it is probably a no fly zone for me even if I can see it from where I have my nails done. Can probably let you know when the crowds die down though.
No more sugar for me, now that's sad! The original glazed, popped into the microwave for just a couple seconds, are heavenly. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI "grew up" in Krispy Kreme country. There is NOTHING better than a fresh, still warm Krispy Kreme donut. You shove the whole thing in your mouth at one time. Gross? Yes, but no one cares. That's how you do a hot Krispy Kreme. At 17 I could eat half a dozen in about 15 minutes. It never mattered if I felt badly later. They were worth every calorie laden minute!
ReplyDelete#(#&$(&* my brother had me driving all over Adelaide in a quest to find this doughnut shop about two years ago after hearing an unfounded rumour ....he is due back in town in a week or two, so my diet will be going out the window then BUT at least I will know which direction to head...I will just have to look for the long queue!
ReplyDeleteI have to say poor old Brissy gets the turned up nose too from our larger counterparts...hicks tag comes to mind but we don't care we have lots of sunshine! I also adored SA. So stay as lovely as you are Lol! I think I went up a size just looking at those goodies. We didn't get them for quite a while either. What a nice hubby!
ReplyDeleteWe have a Krispy Kreme in our town and they had them every Friday at my daughters swim practice. If you can't get them warm you can pop a plain glazed one in the microwave for 10 seconds and it is almost as good. Happy sugar fix.
ReplyDeleteSo, I'm not saying anything so I can stay friends with you :)
ReplyDeleteAhhh love to hear your passion for donuts, sadly there is too many small people that live here to get away with eating donuts for dinner so enjoy some for me!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me smile ;) I liked your warning to the naysayers. Having lived interstate until recently I think Adelaide's biggest critics and problems come from Adelaide itself, not interstate. (Seriously, most people interstate don't even think about Adelaide!) I saw numerous tweets about how Krispy Kremes are just not as good as Balfour's doughnuts so why all the fuss? Then I read about the knife wielding hoodie wearer who held up a couple of people and stole their six boxes of Krispy Kremes. Proof of Krispy Kreme supremacy! How many boxes of Balfour's doughnuts (or carrots for that matter) have been stolen at knife point?
ReplyDeleteOh, yes.....I just inhaled a chocolate covered cream filled Krispy Kreme at the Orlando airport yesterday. I agree, eating countless donuts is entirely possible - especially if you don't bother to chew or inhale.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!
I think my record is six Krispy Kremes .. I'll have to work on that!
ReplyDeleteNot sure they've made it across the ditch yet ... enjoy!!

The original KK is just a couple hours from where we live. We rarely eat the fancier donuts, but my-oh-my...when the "Hot Now" light comes on we hit the brakes and stop for the Original glazed. Enjoy yours! :)
