If you've been a follower for a while you'll know that my rampant bag insecurity makes an appearance every so often. Some people can't bake , some people can't garden and some people can't make bags. I am all three of those people.
Encouraged by a recent bag success (my only success in fact ) with Kat's pouch tutorial I decided to make a fabric basket. I started it last night and finally finished at half past midnight. Look! When I turned it right side out I still had the handles in the right place. That never happens for me. I was doing the happy dance because it was so darn cute.
Until I was admiring my awesome-ness from different angles and telling myself I could make 20 of these because they are so easy and I spied this..Bugger.
See that popped seam on the orange square? Too late to fix it unless I whip out the glue ...which is exactly what I'm going to do. Why do bags hate me so?
..it's enough to drive a girl to eat half a kilo of Belgian chocolate.
Back to the drawing board....sigh.
I love those little bags - its ages since I made any.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about the seam - can we just say "vintage"......
I was laughing before I even started reading the post! Too funny. For someone who makes as many mistakes as me - thank you!! And why am I not there sharing that chocolate with you?
ReplyDeleteAt least it's not a circle bag?
ReplyDeleteThat has happened to me more times than I care to remember :)
ReplyDeletemeheheheh that happens to me all the time too! I have a few places on my bed quilt where I obviously was a bit off with my seams and must fix them before they get any worse.
ReplyDeleteIt's in a bit of a hard place to do anything about really isn't it. Because normally I would suggest patching it with some kind of embellishment, but might look a bit odd there :)
Good on you for doing it though - it looks great otherwise!!
and I think you are full of it - you show us your fine baking all the time!
ReplyDeleteI on the other hand can really NOT bake, nor cook, nor garden. Sewing is my only claim to domesticity.
PS where is my share of that chocolate... save some for me :)
Glue and Belgian chocolate fixes almost anything...umm, not eaten together. ;o)
ReplyDeleteYour basket is lovely. I'd have cussed and glued the popped seam then turned the basket to the other side. Happy Monday night! ☺
Don't you hate that...it's always a lesson learnt ...they are cute I have one near my sewing machine for my threads...
ReplyDeleteAt least you had something to keep you going while on your Mission...
cheers
I seem to remember some lovely baked goods and gardening pictures. The bag looks great. Glue that sucker down and call it a day. What you think you may lack in bag-making skills you more than make up for in ingenuity, perseverance, and a sense of humor...much more important!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, that is SO me, except I don't even bother blogging people to tell them I attempted a pouch or a bag. I'm hopeless at it, and don't know why. The basket is perfect. I wouldn't even glue the seam down. I'd just leave it. character.
ReplyDeleteOther than that, it is lovely. Keep on making them! I think I have about 6 in my studio - big ones - in which I store projects, big batting scraps and fabric. I even have two in my linen closet for storing sheets. Every time I open the closet I smile.
ReplyDeleteOh, bags hate me, too. Many people tried to tell me it was do-able and easy this weekend but I disagree from experience! So much so that I did NOT take the bag making class just so I wouldn't be annoyed all weekend that I wasted my time. :D
ReplyDeleteSing it sista, I'll back you up!
I'd swear too! But then I'd sew a yo yo or button over it or something to make it look intentional and myself feel better....But chocolate works too, right?
ReplyDeleteThat bag must be pretty small - I have some of those fabrics and I'm guessing your squares are about 2 inches across. I find the smaller the bag the harder it is, so maybe go with that as an excuse.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I got the gift of bagmaking. Quilts are warm and all but bags are handy. Being able to make food would be nice too, but I don't need it - the people at KFC are pretty good at it and I wouldn't wanna take that away from them :)
You certainly caught my attention with that post title! I've had that happen to me, and I've had customers bring me quilts where there were seams that were like that also. At least you can fix it. Once I worked on a quilt with more triangles than I think a quilt has a right to; got the quilt together, quilted and bound it, was using it for months, then showed it to a friend and what did I see???? ONE block that was turned the wrong way!! How could I not have noticed that at all before then?? I was not about to take that bugger apart and fix it!
ReplyDeleteI actually got on here to look for a pattern for those fun little bags, and look at that- you did it! I can't seem to make the side-seams match up perfect on bags either, but this is so cute. I'm wanting to make some for co-quilting-retreaters in November. Thank you, thank you, thank you! ;)
ReplyDeleteAnnikas comment when she just spied over my shoulder seeing the bag:" Oh my God Mom..that is the cutiestest little bag I´ve ever seen. How come you never make such pretty things? soooooooo cute...
ReplyDeleteWell I guess that says it all!
She is especially cute - I think she should be forgiven for a little break out! Have fun with the glue.
ReplyDeleteYou really can do it!
Oh I do that a lot - just cover it with a pretty button or a fabric yoyo/flower - presto - fixed!
ReplyDeleteYou need a patch for your patchwork bag!! I think a little something will add character. Or just turn that bit to the wall and get on with making another one which will be perfect!
ReplyDeleteIt is so very cute and you had the handles in the right place and facing the right way. That's better than I could have done. I'd be happy to take it off your hands.
ReplyDeleteI hope you've saved some of that chocolate for me.
It is very cute - just turn it round so that bit doesn't show and don't show all the people on your blog!
ReplyDeleteI feel I need to join in commiserating with you though...on the chocolate eating
The more seams, the more chances that something may not quite go according to plan......and of course the Belgian chocolate has to be dark.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would scream!!! I am so impressed that the handles were in the right place even after you turned the bag through! I find that incredibly hard. I have a half-done bag downstairs right now that had that wrong handleness affliction. Unpicked about 12 months ago? Dragged out a couple of weeks ago, but I'm too afraid to redo so far because I can't work out how it could have possibly gone wrong last time!
ReplyDeleteGood heavens, I wondered where all that bad language was coming from in the middle of the night !!!
ReplyDeleteNever mind, use the glue and we'll pretend this post never happened.... or at least the last part of it anyway. The bag is lovely and yes, go on and make more as Chrissy presents.
Cheers
Still looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI've heard that duct tape can fix just about anything .. really cute. You should make more.
ReplyDeleteSo cute, and I'm so sorry about the boo-boos, I do that all the time. I cut a hole in the skirt I was making my daughter with the serger, so I'm right in the opps boat with you.
ReplyDeleteAn appliqué or well placed little embroidery might work but your idea of glue sounds fine to me.
Thank goodness for chocolate to the rescue! Otherwise a raving success, I'd say :)
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on your self ! Everyone makes little mistakes like that at some time. Like a couple of others have said make a couple of yoyos to cover up, add a couple mare and make it a 'design feature'.
ReplyDeleteThats why all my bags are so simple can't manage ones with separate bottoms. Looks very cute though.
ReplyDeleteI've made this bag but I enlarged the squares to 2 1/2" and adjusted the other measurements to fit....but I'm like you and every now and then my seams just don't match or I've placed the handles the wrong way.Just eat some of that yummy looking chocolate turn the bag to have the seam facing away from you and admire your beautiful work is all I can say.Nobody's perfect....it's too hard to keep it up LOL :) Barb.
ReplyDeleteBut the the handles worked, so the happy dance was jusstified. And it's still really, really cute. Just call it your Amish bag. The Amish never make a perfect project, but their projects are always gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteugh! I hate popped seams! Nothing can ruin a project more. I'm so paranoid about them now, I top-stitch just about everything I work on. Go ahead and enjoy the chocolate. You deserve it. :-)
ReplyDeleteit's still a really cute bag!
ReplyDeleteIt does still look awesome, even with it's popped seam - what a bummer! Maybe it was to do with the lateness of the hour? Stick a big button over it and who would know?
ReplyDeleteI still don't see the issue....
ReplyDeletelove, love, love dark chocolate!
and, you ARE a good cook and baker!
Your bag is darling - I love bags, but HATE making them, myself - reminds me too much of clothing sewing (bleck!) The chocolate looks dang yummy too!
ReplyDeleteJust handstitch your gorgeous label over that bit and voila! Fixed! Looks awesome to me :-)_
ReplyDeleteThat is SO frustrating! I'm with you ~ get out the glue.
ReplyDeleteI love the bag anyway! I made some tiny totes a couple years ago, and had to leave the house for a while to shake the compulsion to keep making more, More, MORE!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you showed this! I'm in the process of making one right now for my scrappy swap partner and am getting ready to sew the sides together. But don't sell yourself short! You did a great job! You just came across one of those little sewing things that keeps us humble. :o)
ReplyDeleteThat is a really cute bag. Sorry about the popped seam. Glueing it is the perfect solution!
