Favourite Things Friday

It's Friday for another week. is it just me or do Fridays roll around really fast?

In celebration of Fridays (and the survival of another work week)  I play a little linky party called Favourite Things Friday and you can play right along too .  Just write a post about one of your favourites and link it up and we can share the things we adore.

Having endured 4 months of the weirdest sleep patterns in the universe , I have to say my favourite thing this week has been sleeping my kind of "normal" again.

I have to say I wish this was my bed but I pilfered the photo from here

I don't need a lot of sleep and I've always been an early riser (with the exception of my early 20's when I was often only just making it home at waking up time and would consequently sleep all day).  When I wake up I'm ready to face the day almost immediately, albeit in my pyjamas. There is no gentle gradual awakening for me. I'm asleep one moment- and bam! awake the next. I do my best thinking right after I wake up too. This is the time when I often solve problems like world peace, what we're having for dinner next Tuesday and how the universe was created.

Unless I fell asleep at 9 pm and wake at 3 am. At that time of the morning it seems I'm incapable of any thought aside from 'What the hell am I doing awake at this hour of the night" . Because ladies and gentlemen - 3 am truly is the middle of the night no matter which way you look at it. And when you wake at 3 am it's not like you can get up and actually do anything because the rest of the house is asleep, like normal people should be.

I'm a midnight go to bed kind of gal because that means at 6 am I'll be awake and ready to think a billion thoughts while I contemplate my day. After 6  hours of sleep (punctured by the dulcet tones of Mr. P's freight train snoring )  I can get in an hour or two of alone and quiet time during which I drink at least two cups of coffee, spend an hour or so seeing what you all got up to since I was here last and then jump into my day.

We tend to underestimate the importance of sleep. And it's usually one of the first things affected when we're under stress. So, from a girl who has spent the last week actually waking at a normal hour for the first time since April I have to say my favourite thing this week is actually sleeping like a normal person. In a bed. At a regular time. Hallelujah!

  1. I'm a late night girl too Shay but since I've retired and so my mind is no longer buzzing with work related stresses I now sleep till 7:00-7:30am without any trouble. The blessing is, when it's cold outside I can snuggle down in my blankets a little longer.(don't you just love your cosy bed in Winter ?)

  2. Sleep is the first thing to go when I am stressed and am an early riser normally.... today 7.15 when I got up so I am under the pump this morning but I am still looking at blogs while I am having my breakfast. I haven't been sleeping well lately but the last couple of days it has been good and I feel better for it. Gotta think about FTF today.

  3. I slept like a baby all holiday long, then 2 days before back to work...up at 4, can't fall asleep, etc. I am a walking zombie most of the time, and had vowed to turn over a new leaf by getting to bed at a decent hour, but lying there awake is soooo frustrating! Will see how it continues. I guess I should just ditch the job and go full steam into a life of leisure, eh?

  5. I too am a go to bed at midnight type of gal. I like to sleep till 8 uninterrupted if possible. But when I do wake at 3am or 5 am, i can get a lot done around the house while everyone else is still asleep, then I can take a nap when they all get up, I love it that way. I love my 8 hours, because after 17 years on night shift not getting hardly any sleep at all, my body is playing catch up. :D

  6. I am usually a stay up late girl...leftovers from motherhood. I love a quiet house late at night. I struggle to get up early when it's cold. So don't! I did manage to get up and do some meditation and yoga this morning which is so nice I wonder why I can't get there every morning.I was awoken at 3am this morning by the 'dear one' who swore our marauding possums were in the house...they weren't!they were on the verandah outside the bedroom.
So no more sleep for me after that!
I am glad you are finally cutting zzz's and feeling refreshed.

  7. 3 a.m. here and I am wide awake. Why?!!? Have the quilt show today and do not want to be a zombie for it. May make the wrong fabric purchase decisions in that state. That would be horrific! Hoping to get the urge to doze off on the sofa shortly.

  8. Yay for good sleep! I'm one of those people who rarely can't sleep. I do best with 7 - 8 hours. I like to wake up before the rest of the household and have quiet time, too. I like to sleep with heavy covers and no pillow. I likemto have a window open to listen to the night noises. Even as a little one, I used to WANT to go to sleep, and I could sleep anywhere. I sigh when I get into bed every night because I'm just somhappy to be there. I LOVE sleep, too! Glad you aregetting your fair share!

  9. I am so glad you are back to a normal sleep pattern...sleep is so important to me. Never used to when I was younger, but for the last five/six years I really need about 7 hrs of sleep on the average. My first problem is that we have to get up at 5:55am..that is still in my best sleep...about 6:45 is a good time and I am wide awake and ready to go..Weird..but on the weekends I jump out of bed at seven wide awake and ready to go...oh well...as soon s the kids leave the house for good I will change my schedule and sleep in longer.

  10. I totally think I'm channeling you. Our posts today were very similar (except your today is my tomorrow and my today is your yesterday). And I've also been cooking like the weather is cool here.

Anyway, I'm glad your feeling more like your old self. Not getting enough sleep, or the right kind of sleep is a huge stressor (says the woman who is up at 12:20 am).

  11. I love that bed! I would want that bed but I'm telling myself it would take forever to dust - but hey, in fairytales there is no dust lol. I love my sleep, cannot function without it, luckily though I rarely suffer from insomnia - the only times I wake up at 3am are when dogs are squeaking to go out and do some business (which she did this morning), but I'd rather that than have to clean up business from off the rug if you know what I mean! Glad to hear you are enjoying some normal sleep - long may it last.

  12. We are very similar. I open my eyes and my day starts. 4am is my witching hour. I must admit I like more than 6 hours sleep though.

  13. Going to work with two hours sleep certainly puts a crimp in my style. I have started running (trotting) again and I find that being physically tired helps so down the circles that start when my head is upon my pillow.

  14. I know just how you feel, after being on cow watch I am finally having a few nights normal sleep....it is bliss :-)

  15. I'm the early riser .... 5:00am everyday year around. and 5 months out of the year I'm at work by 5:30 and the other 7 months it's sewing machine time (or gardening or reading) !!

The downfall of my early rise time -- don't expect me to function past 10:30pm. I will be babbling.

  16. Oh yes, I can imagine sleeping in that cozy bed! I'm a midnight go to bed person too. I get my second wind around 10:30 or 11:00'ish. maybe if I go to bed at ten, I could actually sleep a full 8 hours. :-)

  17. I'm a terrible sleeper! I always say I would have made a great crazy artist, sleeping odd hours, creating amazing things.. I'm glad to hear your sleeping better these days!!

  18. Glad to hear your sleeping better now. My pet theory is that the moon has a lot to answer for. Notice quite q few people have been sleeping better lately!!!!!! Including me.
I'm like you, the minute I'm awake that's it, no going back to sleep for me.

  19. I love my bed and my sleep and was always a deep sleeper up until i had kids and then i would wake up at the slightest sound of a cough or fart. Ive recently started taking magnesium supplements and have found them to promote really deep sleep. Im just hopeless when im tired so these really help!

  21. Glad to hear that the sandman has resumed his normal schedule at your house. Weird sleep schedules tends to make everything else weird too.

  22. now, this is a favourite after my own hear! I love to sleep. I usually don't have a problem falling asleep, but I will wake up at 3am maybe once a week. It is very aggravating. I toss and turn, throw the covers back, and generally annoy my husband. :)

I sleep at least 8 hours a night and I think it may help me stay healthy. I'm hardly ever down with a cold, and I don't think I've ever had the flu.

So glad to hear you're back to normal - must mean your life is finally becoming stress-free (ish)! that's a good thing - I'm happy for you :)

  24. I have never been much of a night owl, to DH's dismay. I love to get up early and I do my best thinking and work in the morning and slowly start to wind down in the afternoon. I have always known the importance of sleep for myself, but there are times I wish I could live on much less!

  25. I have been there with the sleep thing! I'm glad you are back to normal. Oh how much better my marriage would be if I could wake up like you. I don't want to talk for at least an hour after I wake up, and my husband, like you, wants to solve problems. I can barely tell you my name. lol!

I love the bed you borrowed!

  26. Yay sleep!!! I need more than you and I treasure it!

  27. Glad you're sleeping better. It makes such a difference, doesn't it.

Love the bed photo. I can totally see you in that kind of a space!

  28. I once wrote a letter to my sister about how much I loved sleep and missed it desparately .. :). I may simply cut and paste your post for my post this Friday .. With our 39 hour trip over the weekend, sleep and my bed were my best friends yesterday. I couldn't wait.

  29. I've had trouble sleeping for years and it is even worse in hotels. Thats why working away from home was a bit of a nightmare.

I've always been really envious of people who can lay down and just go to sleep - even on a good night it can take me an hour, no matter how tired I am.

  30. Yay! I'm so glad that you are back to your normal sleeping patterns. Sleeping is awesome!
