15 Minutes A Day Challenge

Kate at Life in Pieces is holding a "15 minutes" challenge. If you haven't checked it out you should -because it's a sure fire way to get you being crafty every day or every couple of days, or how ever often you choose.

I did quite well this week. Tuesday-I cut and started making  the binding for "Saturday with Sara".

I tried to make sense of the Paper Piece QAL directions. Patterns and I are not friends. This is what instructions look like to me which is why I never work from an actual pattern.

現在,您可以重複步驟 所有其他件描圖紙(如果我有一個 4塊被子,我就這樣做,但如果我有塊被子,我按照下面的方法),也可以行約件描圖紙(“茶多酚“現在 的我已經厭倦了打

Wednesday I finished the binding ready to go on the quilt

Thursday - I cut the quilt to size.

Friday- I sewed the binding on to the quilt and called it finished. Yay!

Saturday-I did some stitching and started a new project

Sunday-I finished sewing the rows of the zig zag quilt together.

And had another look at the QAL instructions which now look like this ...

Bəziləri yalnız cant nümunələri oxumaq və ya təlimatlara əməl edin. Bu doesnt onları pis insanlar etmək .I'm planning to wait for the instructions to appear to me in a language I actually understand.

Monday-I  realised at 6.10 pm that tracing paper and freezer paper are NOT the same thing. Some minor swearing occurred and I planned to get tracing paper in my lunch break today. Ultimately I decided to use baking paper and see how it goes. I'm calling that 15 minutes because I worried about it for the next hour and then went and cleaned my oven ...this occurs annually so it was well past due. (Bicarb and vinegar works a treat in case you're interested and wont burn the living crap out of your hands if you touch it like commercial cleaners)

So not a bad week in all. A quilt finish, two stitcheries done, the start of a new project and lots of thinking about the QAL . How did you do with your 15 minutes?

PS. Becks took pity on me and posted video tutorials on how to paper piece....Hallelujah! Maybe this quilt will actually get done after all!

PPS. Im not hopeful that much stuff will get done on a daily basis this week since I have visiting royalty coming on Thursday.

  2. OMG Shay... I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post! LOL!!! That happens a lot when I'm working with patterns too...
I tried my hand at paper piecing... I'll upload a post about it today / tomm...
    Cheers

  3. I love that you sew and swear! For me, the two go hand in hand. I need some discipline in the studio. Maybe I should adopt the 15 minutes a day regimen.

  4. Saturday with Sara looks great, you had a really productive week.

I'm instructionally challenged as well. I need pictures at a minimum to make sense of anything.

  6. Wow, I hadn't realised how big the triangles in that quilt actually were until I saw the ruler on it just now - although, with 10 fat quarters and the same again in white, I suppose it would be fairly big, wouldn't it? I guess in my mind I was seeing a neat little bundle of fabrics, and I forget how much they spread out to.

  7. I like the quilt and the stitching projects. I think this 15 minutes is working for you.
I love paper piecing. It is difficult in the beginning to get used to working backwards. My biggest problem was cutting my fabrics pieces large enough to cover the seam allowance.
It's an adjustment, but I know you can do it!

  8. Your rotary cutter looks teeny-tiny, is that what you used to trim your quilt? You are amazing (have I said that before?). Paper-piecing is another language entirely. BTW - our church has conference twice a year and it is broadcast all over the world, but here in the states, you can get it on TV and you don't have to dress up and go to your church building to watch it.

  9. You have been a busy girl! You have done some fantastic work in just 15 minutes a day. I have played hookie from work today, so that I can sew!

I know what you will be doing for the beginning on Thursday and boy am I envious! Wish I could be there!

  10. Your binding looks so pretty all coiled up!

As far as cleaning the stove; if you don't want to have to scrub again, try placing tinfoil sheets on the bottom under the burner.... and just remove and replace when they're dirty. I learned it from a friend about 5 years ago, and haven't scrubbed an oven sinse! =)

We had company coming that had to change plans because of a family death, so now that the house is clean and I can sew without guilt. I'm not so good with 15mins, when I sew it's full-on all day, besides kid interactions.

  11. 15 minutes a day! You really did accomplish quite a bit when you can see the total picture! I have a hard time switching tracks so easily...it's probably the old brain that I'm working with...lol

Most of the time it takes me 15 miuntes to figure out where I left off...to begin the session. Maybe, I should try a 30 min session. =D

  12. I have no earthly idea what QAL is but I am sure you will manage it just as well as anything else you start. You are faboulous.

  13. I am starting a 15 minute a day regime from tomorrow - but I may not blog it as that takes way longer than 15 minutes lol. You creased me up with your freezer paper tracing paper - I always use greaseproof paper (as tracing paper) cos it's way cheaper and I'm cheap :-)

  14. A little late as always. I read your post this morning but had to get to the office (being late because I was commenting on blogs just doesn't seem like a valid excuse). I did realize how big the HSTs were until Sara mentioned it -- they are very cool and Saturday with Sara is really nice.

I am glad I am not the only one who has trouble understanding the paper piecing instructions .. I will definitely need the video when/if I try paper piecing.

  15. A zig-zag quilt? You're making a zig-zag quilt!?! Oh, my gosh, that's going to be fabulous! Can't wait.

Way to go with the finish on Saturday with Sara! You are definitely most amazing.

Oh, and thanks for the tip on the oven cleaner. I haven't been able to find any of that spray-on kind in the stores lately.

  16. As you already know, I totally hear you on the paper piecing instructions, and we are so lucky Beck did the videos! I was thinking about freezer paper too until I watched and saw how it was advantageous to be able to see through the paper. Found some old vellum paper left over from (short-lived) my card making and stamping days. I think I'm good to go now!

Congrats on getting so much done this week! Your finished quilt is amazing. You make such pretty and feminine looking quilts, and mine look like drag queens by comparison. (Not that I don't love a good drag queen; just an observation as to style.) Anyway, work it, girl! P.S.- My word verification is "lipsious."

  17. P.P.S. - I cleaned my stove the other day too (an annual or biannual event). It's a self-cleaner though, so that just means putting up with the horrible smell in the house from whatever burns off at 1,000 degrees for a couple hours.

  18. It looks very sweet, and I must say, done with just a minimum of swearing.

    Good Job!

  19. Have a great time with the visiting Royalty and in your workshop.

Oh and my word verification is Sware!

  20. You really do amaze me. The 15 minute thing is a very good idea. I might apply it to housework. I procrastinate and procrastinate, and then finally do the job, and then say, well, that didn't take very long at all. Procrastinating takes way too much energy.

  21. Trying to comment on my phone when the Internet dies in the arse is APITA but I just had to tell you that your quilt is gorgeous!!! Have a great time with little miss sunshine this weekend. :-)

  22. I love your red and green work. And reading your post has caused me to take to my bed with a cold compress for my head. I'm exhausted! Hope your visit with the Queen went well.

  23. I usually don't follow instructions either. I just look at the pictures. Love the Chinese? I think there are translater programs online but you know what happens whenyou switch from one language to another. When I was getting my manicure this week I was looking at the machine they have that dries the polish. The instructions said "Once you take off your hands your polish will be dry and hard". Didn't feel like taking my hands off so I just sat there til someone came and "removed" my hands from under the machine. Yes, it is a Chinese business but they do an awesome job.

  24. I am doing the SAL project, and I am so far behind. But I am determined to catch up this month. The 15 minutes a day thing works for me. It is so freeing as it allows me to adjust my passion to my life. I don't feel deprived as I have at least 15 minutes with my outlet, and it so often is longer as I did the hard thing and took the time to get started.
