Nanna Napping

One of the best things about being a Nanna at such a young age is that I can legitimately Nanna Nap. One of my biggest problems is that I have no concept of "napping". The only way I sleep is to fall into a state of complete unconscious-ness.

I woke at 6.30 am today after about 3 hours sleep. I only got  three hours sleep  because I supplemented my sleep from the night before with a nanna nap yesterday between 4 and 7 pm. Let's just say we had dinner really late last night.

So since I was awake bright and early today I decided to get a jump start on my day. I planned to be really tasky. And it went really well - I stuck to the plan.  I read blogs , responded to email, got two loads of washing in,(Mr. P isnt allowed to do the washing)  had a shower, tidied the house and hit the road, all before 9 am.

First stop was Spotlight to get some interfacing for a project I had to put on hold yesterday because I ran out. Yesterday, I ended up having the Nanna nap instead of getting in my car to go buy the interfacing and by the time I woke up the shops were shut.

Today I not only got the interfacing , but Spotlight were having a crazy bargain sale so I stocked up on stash fabrics. Most of these were only 4 bucks a metre so I bought a load of half metres.

(Whispering so Mr. P cant hear. I've been doing a lot of "stocking up" this week. I'm ashamed to say out loud how much fabric I've bought which means it must be a LOT)  I figure I totally blew that 100 yard vow so I may as well finish the year in style.  I just have to figure out how to hide the parcels when they start arriving.

Yesterday I hit the op shops on a mission to find the ugliest handbags in the universe. I'm sure you'll agree that I succeeded.

Have you seen the price of handles in the craft shops? $14.95 a pair. Are they joking?  I got all four of these for 12 bucks. Can you see where I'm going with this? Basically I was using those ugly handbags for their handles. Yes- those handbags had to die so that I could create frugally.

Today the interfacing and I got jiggy.....

With my new iron because my old one was total crap and I've pretty much hated it since the day we got it. It probably doesn't help that the old iron has been dropped multiple times and has probably worked the equivalent of 60 hours a week for the last 21 months.  It's like a Chinese sweat shop for irons here.

And I knocked up (drum roll please) an actual handbag. That I actually like.

Then, flushed with my own brilliance I decided to take a 10 minute break and read a book on my Ipad because it was 2 pm and I'd already achieved so much.

I may have gotten a little too big for my britches. I took another unplanned nanna nap and woke at 7pm. (Does 5 hours even count as a nap?) And yes we had dinner at the fashionable hour of 9.15pm again tonight.

You may well ask why Mr. P isnt allowed to do the washing. I'll let his picture tell the story. Two identical new bras. Worn the same amount of times. Washed once each. Guess which one Mr. P washed? Idiot. And it isn't the first time. All my white bras are this particular shade of grotty grey.

Love Love Love the handbag.
Can I also say the Mr P is no idiot, if you make the white things go funny colours in the wash then your never allowed to do the washing again well in my mind that makes Mr P a genious dosnt it? No one ever banned me from doing the washing, what do you think Im doing wrong?
Men also do the same thing in the garden, pull out your new seedlings etc and run over your favourite plants with the lawnmower, this also gets them off the gardening hook. MEN ARE A LOT SMARTER THAN THEY LOOK!

So....napping would help my productivity? I am on board!!

Your bag is so lovely it cannot be mentioned in the same sentence. As that other one!

If that's what napping results in I'm all for it! Yawn....

I adore the handbag! You are so creative. Late dinner withstanding, perhaps Nanna Naps should occur every weekend. Look at all you got done! ☺

Oh dear...your poor bras. My boobs would probably revolt and droop even more at the sight of a grotty grey bra. ;)

Happy Saturday night!

I'm with take the cake - my husband washed a red shirt in the whites, and I swear it was on purpose so I wouldn't make him do laundry ever again. And it totally worked.
Love the purse! What iron did you get? A fancy one? Mine has given up and I'm trying to decide what to replace it with.

What a GREAT idea to get ugly purses at the OP shop for the handles! And your bag sure makes that handle look much better. I just woke up, but think I'll go take a nap so I can get inspired!

I love that little purse, and great idea to recycle handles!
And about the bra thing....grey is a nice neutral color :) and if it would mean not having to do laundry I would just invest in more grey lingerie!! LOL

Your bag is gorgeous. I love your creative thinking for getting the handles. I thought you were maybe taking part in a challenge to find fugly bags! LOL As for the sleeping....you must need it.

Lookie at that pretty handbag! You chose great K.F. prints too, what's not to love? And great idea on the recycling of the thrift store handles, you are bubbling over with great ideas, Shay...including Nanna naps!

I was all up on how I was going to comment about your productivity and make the observation that your Nanna naps must be doing you some good ~ when I saw the bra picture. Literally laughing out loud, dear Shay! Thanks for the giggle!

You are amazing! I had a thought when reading your post .. stock up on fabric this year so next year you can stick to 100 yards. Actually a better thought is to increase the amount of fabric you allow yourself to get.

love the new fabrics and the new handbag. so very cute.

The bag is great - can't say that you can't make them anymore now can you! I expect everyone you know will want them for xmas pressie so you will end up doing nothing but bag making --- won't that be fun!

Very cute purse. Well done on both the purse and the repurposed old purse handles.

I have to agree with Take the Cake and the other Kate on the no laundry duty for your guy. I tried to fix this problem, but putting my cloths that have to be specially washed in my own basket (after one particularly ugly laundry incident involving a dry clean only dress). I've told him the clothes in the other baskets are fair game, he can wash anything in those baskets. But the response I always get is "But what if one of your things are in those baskets." My reply "Then it's my fault because it's in the wrong basket". His retort, "No, you'll find some way to make it my fault." After that I just gave up.

LOL!!!! Thanks for sharing your bras! They are quite pretty. Maybe Mr. P. was only thinking of you and wanted you to have a matching under garment for your gray items. I'm SURE thta's what it was! LOL And I LOVE the bag! What a great idea on the handles. I never thought of doing something like that...but I will now, because buying purse handles will break the bank! Thanks, Shay!

Beauty! Great idea to strip naked the ugly bags for their hardware. Love it!

I think you might want to either cut back on carbs or load up on caffeine to reduce your sleeping stretches to actual nap length...

Mr. P's washing sounds like my son's method of what goes in the wash together: either it is dirty or it's not, doesn't matter what color it is!

Love the handbag, aren't you a clever little vegemite for buying ugly bags and re-using the handles. I have a pair of handles at home for the same purpose which are waiting for a bag to hang off.....one day......while he was stil living at home our older son had a minor disaster involving a red tee shirt and some white business shirts. Lesson learnt.

My Nanna Naps consist of 40mins these days...Lucky You.
Love your Bag Impressed by the Clips..Clever!
Bargains for your Fabric Stash Well Done!!
cheers

I can absolutely categorically attest to your ability to be in a state of unconsciousness during a nanna nap. You should start calling yours Rip Van Winkle naps, because they are definitely not nanna naps.
Aren't you a clever poppet for thinking of going and finding ugly bags to kill for trophy handles, that's a brilliant idea, and what an absolutely fabulous outcome. I love it, that fabric is really pretty and you put a clasp in too. Gold star for you missy!

Did you leave any fabric behind in Spotlight?

I think the others are right and Mr P is trying to get out of doing the washing!

I am a granny napper lol and there must be something in the air as the last few days I just want to sleep alot.Wish I had your organisation to do things tho but having 5 grandies living here doesnt always make it easy for me to do what I would like without interruption (my excuse lol)
great job on tha bags I pick up these handles when I see them too Crazy prices when new.

Who knew nanna naps could make for so much productivity . The old bloke here doesn't even know where the washing machine is ......

That hand bag is fantastic. And I am jealous we don't have a Spotlight in the UK. And I am also jealous because I want to have Nanna naps too but I hammy kids so freaking late Iam going to be ancient before I qualify.

Now I know why there were no pretties on the Bargain table when I got to Spotlight after work yesterday, didn't stop me from collecting a little for my stash anyway.
Those handles were a bargain and your new bag is looking gorgeous I hope you get to show it off soon.
Enjoy Sunday after your Nanna Nap.

No wonder you needed a nanna nap...I'm exhausted just reading your progress for the day!
At $4/metre you really are obligated to liberate those fabrics from the shop, it is community service to fabric.
Love the bag...well done on repurposing the handles, what a great idea.
Now I'm going to rest, you've worn me out *LOL*...

You are a wonder! The bag is beautiful. What an inventive lady you are. I had a "nana nap" today and loved it. Working on my DFWM red evening suit has been exhausting.
Be well and keep the pen flowing.

Its a conspiracy!!! , those bastards do it on purpose cos they KNOW we will say DONT TOUCH THE WASHING! For Goodness Sake ,How hard is it to wash white stuff with white and dark stuff with darks ???

LURVE the bag - ingenious idea with the handles, Miss Smarty Pants!

I had a nanna nap yesterday too... it didn't end well... I fell asleep about 7am this morning.

I've been pillaging handbags for years now. I haven't used complete handles, but I buy bags with lots of o-rings or interesting clasps. It's a bit more effort, but waaaay way cheaper.

OK, I need a tutorial on the bag making! Bought a bag kit from the Quilt Fair last weekend and it was a disaster - instructions were shite and I have no idea how to attach the magnetic clasp thingies....I need your HELP!!!

I suffer from 3.30itis but fight it off by thinking I'll get an early night instead, and never do. Perhaps I should just give in.... :-)

Great thriftiness on the handles the bag is lovely. No wonder you need a nana nap I get exhausted just reading what you get up to.

My boys know I am really sick when I have a nana nap on the floor of the lounge because I can't keep myself upright any longer....thankfully it hardly ever happens and now they are old enough to get their own tea. I get my catch up sleep on Sunday morning when Billy gets bacon and eggs for the boys and himself and they let me lie in...BLISS!

Nice bag and I do that too to get the handles, they ARE so expensive new! Shame about the bra :-(

Karen said...

Your bag is fantastic! We need to see a tutorial maybe. You know, I have bought fabric (too much) lately too...but when you find great prices you can't say noo really...right? :)

Very cute bag and I can see why the uglies had to die sad as that is. great bargains too. I think your Mr P. is smarter than you give hin credit for. Make a muck of it = don't have to do it again. Hmmmm!!!

Brenda said...

Aren't you the clever girl with the handbag handles! And the bra pic is hilarious and worth a thousand words! Hahahahaha. (My hubby pretends he can't run the washer)

Anonymous said...

Okay, have to agree. No more Mr. P doing the laundry. The evidence is damaging and clear. That was smart, buying the bargain pocketbooks for the handle. More money for fabric! I'm looking forward to the days when I can take Nana naps. It is kind of unfair because I am old enough now. But I don't think you can call giving birth in your forties and then having a five-year-old calling, "Mom? Where are you?" at various times throughout the day anything other than what I justly deserve. On the other hand, I like to think all that activity keeps me young. Yeah, I'm going with that:-)

I love, love, love the new handbag! Great job, and a quite nap worthy work it is.

My sewing for this week, which was supposed to be my time to sew amounted to finishing a dress for Thumper (I honestly was almost finished when I started) and quilting one square on my wonky log cabin quilt. So you are still ahead of me nap and all.

Also, my husband is forbidden to do laundry too. The only exceptions are his hunting clothes. He can do them if he doesn't touch any of mine in the process!

I had two of my grans for the night last night and so I did a little napping myself this afternoon! They were very good, but I was still worn out!

That handbag you made is fabulous!! Clever to use handles sacrificed from thrifted purses. I'm sure they were glad to be separated from their ugly bits and given new life and cuteness!

Unknown said...

THe idea to use handles from ugly bags is brilliants! I may have to use that idea...

Marti said...

I love the bag you made, and so smart of you to use cheapo handbags for the handles.

My dh isn't allowed to do laundry for almost the same reason. If it isn't washing all the clothes together on warm, it's because he doesn't check HIS pockets for ball point pens, and it's usually my clothes that pay the price.

Elizabeth said...

This concept of sleeping eight consecutive hours just doesn't work for me. I want to sleep when I want to sleep and be awake when I want to be awake.

Also, how on earth did Mr. P do that to your bra? Mistake a bucket of sand for laundry soap?

Love your new iron. I'm a wee bit jealous.

And great call on the bag handles.

Oh, I almost forgot -- love your new fabrics!
